Get Educated on the Issues FAQ on I-8

April 28. 2006 - VDOT announced today that it is extending the opportunity for comment on the I-81 Corridor DEIS through Monday, May 29, Memorial Day. Please send your comments to
cg.collins@VirginiaDOT.org and don't forget to copy all your comments to Gov. Kaine at his website:

1000 people attended hearings; 90% of the 220 who spoke in public at the hearings opposed all or part of VDOT plan.

  1. Please take this opportunity to make one last appeal to folk you know statewide. Ask them to say:

"VDOT should respond to the widespread criticism of the DEIS at public hearings throughout the Corridor. VDOT should wait for and incorporate the results of the I-81 Corridor Multi-state Rail Feasibility Plan in the DEIS. [The multi-state Rail Feasibility

Plan, HB-1581 was passed unanimously by the 2006 General Assembly, and will correct a major flaw in the DEIS, which failed to evaluate the impact on truck traffic projections of rail improvements beyond Virginia's borders.] VDOT should then issue a supplemental DEIS for comment incorporating the results of the Rail Feasibility Plan and responding to concerns expressed in the citizen comments on the current DEIS."

Giving Feedback to VDOT is Essential!

(The information above comes from a Rail Solution e-mail)

I added: “We need to start really considering the environment in our environmental impact statements and in our transportation planning overall.

Lets plan long term, taking into consideration air and water quality concerns in Virginia.  We need to invest in bike trails, rail, and sidewalks. We need to quit thinking that concrete alone can solve our transportation problems. Now it is a choice, soon it will be a necessity. Why not lead the way?”

We have got to do better!

Email your comments to Christopher Collins, Project Study Manager at:

by SATURDAY, May 29, 2006.

Please email a copy of your comments to Governor Tim Kaine, who has the power to get VDOT's attention: http://www.governor.virginia.gov/AboutTheGovernor/contactGovernor.cfm

Thank you for helping get the message to VDOT and Gov. Kaine that the

VDOT plan is UNACCEPTABLE.
